About the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy

On any given Monday morning, a teacher reads through the day's lesson plans one last time and considers the demands ahead. A state education commissioner studies her schedule and contemplates the meetings to be attended, the regulations to be readied. The researcher prepares his fitted logistical regression models for publication. Three individuals in three professional communities, three sets of concerns expressed in three languages. A common goal unites them: to help America’s school children reach their full potential.

Join us in our endeavor to integrate these worlds. We believe that building partnerships across these different constituencies is necessary to advance excellence and equity for all of America’s children. The Institute operates on the understanding that education policy must be informed both by real-world conditions and also by excellent research; that it is possible to translate the technical vocabularies of research into a language that is accessible and useful to policy experts, principals, teachers and parents; that in our richly diverse nation, education must be driven and sustained by evidence about what works and what does not.

To make good on these commitments, the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy breaks down the silos that separate those on the front lines of schooling from those who are working to inform and regulate their worlds. We create partnerships among scholars so that they may share expertise and new research on our classrooms’ most pressing challenges. We bring evidence of effective reforms to policy-makers in their language - attuned to political realities and informed by the tough metrics of cost and benefits. We rescue from obscurity important findings about powerful educational interventions and share them with school districts, state legislators, and state departments of education. Building on a model we developed in New York City, we convene leaders from diverse and often opposing viewpoints to analyze our toughest educational issues.

 Now is the time to bridge the divides to ensure the high-caliber education all children need and deserve.
